Last night, the Savannah Bananas turned the 2026 ESPYs into a full-blown Broadway musical, complete with yellow uniforms, jazz hands, and a choreographed bop called The Show Starts Now. And somewhere in America, Dave Portnoy nearly dropped his pizza.
GET THE F—ING BANANAS OFF MY TV, the Barstool king roared, speaking for every sports fan who just wanted to watch some highlights without a surprise pirouette. Welcome to the Great Banana Schism of 2026, where one side is serving showmanship, and the other is begging for a timeout. Double Take, indeed.

What the Hell Did We Just Watch?
The viral baseball troupe kicked off the ESPYs now in New York City with their original song, produced by the Dear Evan Hansen and Greatest Showman guys. Player and Broadway star Derek Klena led the charge while the rest of the squad danced, lip synced, and did their signature antics in those loud yellow uniforms. Then DJ Khaled rolled out like this was completely normal.
It was a lot. Like if someone spiked the Gatorade with pure musical theater.
🚨🚨TRENDING🚨🚨
THE ESPYS ARE UNDER HEAVY CRITICISM FROM FANS FOR HAVING THE SAVANNAH BANANAS SING AND PERFORM TO OPEN UP TONIGHT’S SHOW.

One of the worst performances of all time. pic.twitter.com/2BM7T38vnM

What is the audience for a fake baseball team doing bad musical dance song ensemble pieces? Legit, I’m asking. Are there lots of sports fans clamoring for fake sports teams to do bad Broadway musicals? This seems like an audience of zero. https://t.co/SYNunKsVxk

Portnoy’s Meltdown: Iconic
Dave Portnoy did not hold back. In a video reaction that’s already going viral, he yelled:
What the f—? What the f— is this? Get the Bananas off my f—ing screen. This guy’s doing a pirouette.
He said he was watching Chronicle on ABC, looked up, and suddenly his TV was possessed by dancing baseball players. Peak everyman rage. I felt that in my soul.
Is baseball gay now?

Our Double Take: Rom Com Breakup Edition
Here’s the real tea: This isn’t just about a performance. It’s a full blown culture clash between two very American forces.
The Savannah Bananas are the flashy, attention loving partner trying to drag sports into the TikTok Broadway era. Dave Portnoy is the loyal, no BS boyfriend on the couch yelling I didn’t sign up for this.
As a Gen Xer, I’m somewhere in the middle. I survived Hammer pants and the Macarena. I can handle some showboating. But there’s still something to be said for sports that feel like sports instead of a participation trophy musical.
The Bananas are ridiculous. And ridiculously entertaining. That’s America, baby.
So What’s the Verdict?
Peak sports entertainment or clown hour?
I’m calling it Peak Clown Hour Entertainment, and honestly, I respect the hustle. Just maybe don’t lead with it next year, guys.
