I’ve always liked Taco Bell’s tacos. That’s my usual order when I go, nothing too crazy, just the basics. So when this story popped up, I had to do a real double-take.
Taco Bell started pulling lettuce, cilantro, pico de gallo, and a few other fresh items from some of their locations because of the cyclosporiasis outbreak making the rounds. Health officials are investigating lettuce as a key suspect, and some news reports are connecting it to suppliers that work with Taco Bell. The company is being cautious and yanking the stuff for now. Smart move on their part.
Still, it’s hard not to laugh (in a dark way) at how quickly “Live Más” turns into “Live Near the Bathroom.”

What the Heck Is Going On?
Cyclosporiasis is caused by a microscopic parasite called Cyclospora cayetanensis. It gets onto fresh produce through contaminated water or handling and then ends up on your plate. The symptoms are no joke: explosive watery diarrhea, nausea, bad stomach cramps, and tiredness that can stick around for weeks.
The outbreak has been growing fast, especially in Michigan where thousands of cases have been reported. Other states are seeing spikes too. Taco Bell isn’t the only restaurant caught up in all this, but they’re the most visible one right now with those “sorry, no lettuce” signs going up.
A moment of silence for my beautiful Patriots that had Taco Bell for dinner last night……….🥴

My Taco Bell Loyalty Just Got Tested
I haven’t swung by in a while, and after seeing this I’m honestly glad. I do enjoy their tacos, so the timing feels a little too on the nose. It’s one of those moments that makes you rethink grabbing “fresh” toppings without a second thought.
Now I’m looking at the lettuce in my own fridge a lot more suspiciously. It’s funny how something so ordinary can suddenly feel risky.

The Bottom Line
Taco Bell has been through worse and they’ll get past this too. But episodes like this are a good reminder that our food supply can be fragile. Until they pin down the exact source and get it sorted, I’m sticking closer to home cooking.
If you’ve got Taco Bell stories- the good, the bad, or the regret-filled- leave them in the comments. I’m curious what everyone else is thinking.
Stay safe, wash your veggies, and try not to lose your sense of humor about it.
